City Takes Another Step in Requiring Public Disclosure of Personal Devices

July 11, 2016

SAN DIEGO (July 11, 2016) – The San Diego City Council today approved directing the City Attorney to prepare language to place on the November 2016 ballot, a measure to require the disclosure of the City of San Diego’s public business conducted on private and personal devices of all City employees.

Previous attempts for ballot measures were defeated both in Council and at Committee in 2013 and 2014.

“I have been working with Californians Aware on open government and transparency for the last 3 years,” said Alvarez. “It is my firm belief that the public has a right to know what their elected officials are doing and how they make decisions.  This measure would make sure that happens.”

“Californians Aware believes it is reasonable for the public to expect that their right to open government is not subject to change based on who is in office,” said Donna Frye, President Emerita of Californians Aware.  “We are proud to have proposed this measure to the Council and look forward to seeing it on the November ballot.”

Today’s vote also directs the City's labor negotiating team to meet-and-confer with the employee organizations on this ballot measure to represented employees.  This proposal would return to Council for consideration of these ordinances no later than August 2, 2016.
