CM Alvarez Proposes Budget Priorities for Equity in all Neighborhoods

January 28, 2015

SAN DIEGO, CA (January 28, 2015) – San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez today outlined budget priorities for Fiscal Year 2015 Mid-Year and Fiscal Year 2016.

In a joint budget memorandum issued by Councilmembers Alvarez, Cole and Gloria, their primary focus is prioritizing investment in underserved neighborhoods.  These investments include essential services such as police, fire-rescue and increased infrastructure investment for streets, streetlights, safe sidewalks, libraries, parks and many more services.

“Our priorities will ensure that every community is on a level playing field,” said Councilmember Alvarez.  “I am proud to work with my colleagues, Councilmembers Cole and Emerald, on prioritizing neighborhoods which have historically been underserved.”

Included among the funding priorities are:  police recruitment and retention; an increased amount of infrastructure needs including streetlights, sidewalks, parks and pedestrian and cycling safety upgrades; and restoring recreation center hours and before/afterschool programs.

The Budget and Government Efficiency Committee is currently discussing the City Council’s budget priorities at its meeting today.
