SAN DIEGO (October 17, 2017) – Today, the San Diego City Council approved signing on to an amicus brief in support of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission v. Master Piece Cakeshop, Ltd. In this case, a bakery owner argued that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated his First Amendment rights on free exercise of religion and free speech grounds when it found that the cake shop violated Colorado’s anti-discrimination law by categorically refusing to sell wedding cakes to same-sex couples. The United States Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on this case on December 5th. Councilmember Alvarez has issued the following statement:
"This is a blatant act of discrimination. I support the amicus brief because I support equal rights.”
