Assemblymember and Budget Sub Committee Chair David Alvarez’s Statement on the Governor’s Budget Proposal:
(Sacramento) - Over the years, we have made significant educational investments in TK through 12th grade education. As Chair of the Sub Committee on Education Finance, I am committed to maintaining funding that keeps programs that have improved student success. This year’s budget crisis should not negatively impact school classrooms, and we must prevent teacher and staff layoffs. But we need to be accountable to taxpayers and have difficult conversations about cuts to programs that were one-time expenditures and that have not been proven effective.
We must also continue investing in higher education and provide opportunities for college. Our committee will hold programs accountable and focus on what works while cutting back on what does not increase access to college. The uncertainty in this year’s budget means we will reject new proposals that do not increase student outcomes and invest in priorities that do create college opportunities such as implementing Cal Grant Reform.
As we go through the budget process, thoughtful decisions will be made to continue providing quality education to our students while ensuring we are responsible with our limited resources.
